The Tao of Product Development - Build the Right Product the First Time
Limited Capacity filling up

Most companies deal with a similar set of failure patterns: the product was delivered late, it didn't resemble the original vision, it didn't work properly and had to be redone, or the users simply didn't like it. As product leaders, we try to fix these problems with process and layers of management. We write process documents, measure productivity, and provide incentives to motivate. The real root cause, however, is a failure of leadership, not execution.

We must build our companies upon a purpose, to serve a specific group of people, and build solutions that make a meaningful impact in their lives. We must develop a culture that enables every employee to develop empathy with the customers, which in turn breeds trust, loyalty, and ultimately love. We can accomplish this through User-Centered Design, and extend it to a User-Centered Culture.

In this talk, I will discuss the problems and pains suffered by almost every product development company to some degree. I will discuss the philosophy, strategy, and tactics that can be employed to ensure every employee is bought into the mission, has empathy for the customers, and feel like they are the machine, not the cog.

The Art and Science of Storytelling for New Entrepreneurs
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Nothing is more compelling than a good story.  Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools in business but it is often underutilized even though research indicates that our brains are hardwired for this kind of narrative.  Storytelling builds trust, credibility, and cooperation.  When we use storytelling correctly we can build relationships and influence outcomes and greatly increase our influence.  This workshop uses the latest in neuroscience research to help new entrepreneurs discover and produce their own unique story.

Participants will learn:
  • How to create a basic narrative
  • How storytelling impacts the brain
  • How to use storytelling to influence behavior
This session is especially designed for new entrepreneurs, but more experienced entrepreneurs may want to join us also.  We all have a story, and this session will teach us how to tell that story in a way that is most persuasive and fitting with our own innate nature.

Scaling an AI Business: How to go from Local to Global
Limited Capacity seats available

San Diego is full of exciting, life changing ideas. But taking an idea, turning it into reality and scaling it into a global business is no easy task. Brain Corporation, a San Diego-based AI company specializing in the development of autonomous navigation technology for commercial applications, knows first-hand what goes into successfully scaling a startup in SD.

Launched in 2009, Brain Corp had a clear vision of the potential for robots to work with and care for people. The company began building robots, but soon realized the true market need wasn’t for the physical robot, but rather for its “brain.” The resulting innovation was a software operating system that brings manual objects to life.

The initial use for Brain’s AI platform has been to empower OEMs (industrial floor-scrubber manufacturers) who provide commercial floor care machines to airports, malls, warehouses and big-box retailers. The BrainOS AI platform has become a cost-effective way to transform manual floor cleaners into autonomous robots, equipping them with seeing, thinking and self-driving capabilities.
After years perfecting its technology stack, Brain needed a capital partner to expand its capabilities and effectively commercialize its product offerings. The company pursued funding from one of the world’s largest tech investors, Softbank. In June 2017, it secured $114 million in Series C funding, allowing the company to expand its R&D efforts to develop multiple types of robots for various industries. Brain Corp envisions its model of autonomy-as-a-service to be the way of the future, eventually decreasing the cost of robots and helping expand them into every industry.

Customized Hardware + Software = Optimum User Experience
Limited Capacity seats available

Learn why Aira decided to invest in customized hardware to optimize delivery of their Software AI
service for people who are blind or have low vision.

Off the shelf smart glasses (like Google Glass) had multiple limitations including connection /WIFI
challenges, and they attracted unwanted attention. What the service really required was a customized
design that relates to the day in the life of a blind/ visually impaired person.

Aira teamed with DDSTUDIO, a Human Centered Design firm, to develop Horizon Smart Glasses.
The Development team leadership will share how their ‘multidiscipline team approach’ enabled them to design a startup product for Aira in less than one year. They will discuss the right time to incorporate various specialized skills, including materials science and prototype manufacturing.
